When a covey of California Quail (Callipepla californica) browse, a male will station himself on a high vantage point, to watch for danger. After a while, another quail will take his place so he has a chance to eat too. Here along Deer Path Trail, the high point was in a buckwheat plant, so the watch-quail could just dip his beak and browse in place, once he was relieved.

This time of year, young bucks are venturing away from the natal herd. A pair of bucks, their antlers emerging, greet us as we leave the Mader Valley Trail toward Longspur. Here is one, focused on us with eyes and ears. Hayfields Tarweed spreads over the cleared grassland: close your eyes and take a deep breath!

From our morning walks, 9/16 and 9/17/2023.
