Dramatic clouds pass overhead; raindrops linger at the tips of the grasses. Springtime flowers appear: Lowland Shooting Star, its spectacular florid pink, white, yellow, and magenta blossoms (do these colors even go together?) accented by clinging raindrops; deep red Warrior’s Plume, still there beneath the discarded branches; Fremont Star Lily; and Black Oak, its red new leaves outshining its drooping flowers. Birders among us have another successful day; posing for me are American Robins foraging in the moist grass; female Acorn Woodpecker standing guard; Red-tailed Hawk rising into the sky; and a scruffy California Scrub Jay taking off as we return to Escobar Gate. An American Crow (or is it a raven?) announces its presence emphatically, moving back and forth between trees to let everyone know who rules the roost. Beneath corrugated metal left for that purpose, a fantastic striped lizard waits, iridescent blue tail and all.
March transect with the birding group out of Escobar Gate.
