After growing to maturity and thriving for years, after dying and being reborn as a home base for a tribe of Acorn Woodpeckers, a place to stash their hoard of provisions against hard times – the old Valley Oak snag near the Sun Field Station has fallen. This season’s wild weather, with heavy rain and strong winds, has been its last.

The woodpeckers congregate on a nearby, smaller granary tree. They had the foresight to not put all their acorns in one tree.
