Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) in California Bay
Returning from our walk up Windy Hill the next morning, we again hear the loud sound of a woodpecker pecking. This time the shocks are more spaced out, as if the bird is working on excavating a hole, looking for insects. They do not have the incredible carrying resonance of the drumming yesterday. And fewer pecks per sequence. After a long search, we finally see the bird, high in a California Bay next to the bridge over Corte Madera Creek at the entrance to the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve, off Alpine Road near Willowbrook. This is perhaps a mile down the hill from where we heard and saw the bird yesterday morning. It was very hard to get a good view of the bird in the midst of the bay leaves, as these photos show. 10/18/2021, 9:09:01 am.
