This looks like tool use to me. The Sapsucker grasps the twig by the end, as if to stick it into a cavity to help extract an insect. Before this, the bird was indeed probing the cavities in the tree; its head obscured its beak so I could not see how. 9/28/2021, 8:30:26 am.
