Sapsucker on Phaenopela Tree
A Sapsucker flies to a lichen-covered branch of the "Phainopepla Tree", a dead Valley Oak on the ridge. Both the tree and its mistletoe are quite dead; the lichen uses the dead branches for support. This tree remains a haven for many species of birds -- as an elevated viewing platform for Kites and other raptors, an insect trove for insect-eaters. and a perch for many. The birders spent time here, registering several species, including this rare Sapsucker. 9/28/2021, 8:29:38 am.
