In a leisurely July traverse across the Preserve, we experience a variety of ecosystems and several interesting creatures.

Beginning at Escobar Gate, we walk along the Ridge through tarweed-bedecked grassland and open forest. A young fawn stares. American Kestrel, fluffy juvenile California Towhees, and a loud juvenile Red-tailed Hawk [thanks, Marty!] enliven the skies. Buckeye Butterfly and grasshopper inhabit grassland.

Turning south toward the “western” hills, we pass a large deposit of scat, complete with a bundle of clean bones, neatly folded.

We pass down toward the creek, through grassland, forest, and chaparral. A male Anna’s Hummingbird demonstrates how to make color without pigment, iridescently. Invasive Fuller’s Teasel and Pennyroyals (?) dance in the morning sunlight.

Down near Searsville Lake, Acorn Woodpeckers tend their granary tree, and a Northern Pacific Rattlesnake slithers away from the trail.
