An encounter on Alpine Trail on a foggy morning: a curious buck looking back from the Frog Pond proper, toward the woodland and the protected trail along its edge. How did the buck get there? Where did he spend the night? CONNECTION is important! The entire Frog Pond Preserve, including the small woodland behind the actual Frog Pond, all the way to Alpine Road, is an essential part of the ecology of the Frog Pond and a connection to other open spaces and natural spaces nearby. The woods, the small creek carrying water from the pond in season, the nests of Dusky-footed Woodrats and perhaps birds like the White-tailed Kite -- all essential to the life of the Frog Pond and the natural ambience of Portola Valley and the Alpine Road Corridor.

Check out the captions beneath each photo. Though the buck turned away before departing, he kept his sensitive ears focused on me.
