A springtime walk in Coal Mine Ridge Nature Preserve of Portola Valley Ranch: up Toyon Trail, down Arroyo. A stop at the Grandmother Oak at the top of the ridge.

Spring is bursting out all over. I saw the red, white, and blue flowers of early spring: Trillium, Milkmaids, and Hound's Tongue. Here are photographs of the latter only -- the other two are elsewhere. Milkmaids tend toward pink. Actually, so do Hound's Tongue. And you could say that some Trillium tend pink as well. So, the spring colors are red, white, and blue -- with a touch of pink.

Not too many of Herb Dengler's 24 flowers yet. I expect more later.

Several flowering trees. Madrone blossoms, knocked down to the trail by the wind and rain. California Bay Laurel. Lots of Buckeye, though not in flower yet.

And for the record, some of the trail signs encountered en route. It is nice to see dedications to Herb Dengler, Dick Anderson, and Marilyn Walter. Where is Jane Ames?
