In anticipation of the rain, I spent several hours on the ridge near Escobar Gate on April 5. Two days later, I paid a brief visit as the storm clouds were lifting, after the late-season downpour. Both visits, I saw many spring flowers in the serpentine grassland -- and on many of the flowers, insects. I even saw what might have been the same fly, on the same flower, near Escobar Gate, looking a little bedraggled and water-soaked after the rain; it had been pollen-bedecked two days earlier.
I share these images for at least two purposes: to document life at Jasper Ridge and the passing of the seasons, sharing interesting moments -- and to build my skills as a photographer, sharing my best work. Furthering the latter aim, I am starting a "Select" collection -- just under "Jasper Ridge". Four images from today's expeditions have tentatively been added to the select collection. Do you agree that these are the best?
In furtherance of the former aim, I do try to identify the species of the plants and insects I depict. But at some point, perhaps it is better to just release the photos, and let the rest of you help with the IDs. If you know something, leave a comment and say something. Many people will appreciate your help.
