Into Escobar Gate before sunrise, I surprise a deer. It is great, experiencing the beginning of a new day, the transition of light from fragile, jewel-like, tentative into the full sunlight of a new day.

After the deer, I encounter a kite, dismembering a warm vole on the highest point of the valley oak, a place with a wide view all around. I call this tree the "Phainopepla Tree" -- named after an earlier encounter, years ago, that introduced me to the Escobar Gate birding group. At the Phainopepla Tree, I watched the daybreak sweep towards us. lighting up the tree in flame.

I travel a different path today, different from my usual -- then, later, join the birders on our usual route, including the Birding Transect Trail. Please leave a comment on a photo with your ID, or any news.
