Lonely Valley Oak (Quercus lobata)

Lonely Valley Oak (Quercus lobata)

As I was photographing the mid mistletoe-covered valley oak, a shadow fell across us. A fog bank was slowly advancing from behind, from the east, shadowing the sun. I started walking briskly toward this oak, my favorite, hoping to gain a photo before the shadow hit it. The shadow kept pace. I walked faster, then broke into a run. I just managed to grab this shot before this tree was totally in the shade. Notice that this tree is in full leaf, not like the Phainopepla Tree, the same species, no leaves at all. Also, notice that this tree, despite being isolated and a haven for some birds, has no mistletoe at all. For this tree, I have noticed white-tailed kites and swallows. An owl has made a home inside it. Fog from behind, low fog ahead. Road F near Trail 15, 8:12 am.
