Gateway Oak with Toyon

Gateway Oak with Toyon

The fog has truly set in. The toyon is ready for the holiday season, covered in red berries. This valley oak seems to have last year's, brown, leaves. (The lonely valley oak and the mid mistletoe oak seem to have new, green leaves; the "Painophepla Tree", also a valley oak, has no leaves at all. Quite a variation among nearby oaks of the same species on this December day.) This valley oak (Quercus lobata), with neighboring berry-covered toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) stands at the entrance to the special Bird Transect Trail, which the Escobar bird transect crew is allowed to use on their monthly survey. This trail is not open to the general public. It runs from Trail 15, northwest, mostly paralleling Road F, toward the Bay. 8:23 am.
