Deer browse the little coast live oaks, keeping them as bushes, close to the ground. The "bush" grows in diameter, until the deer does not bother to reach way into the center to browse the center shoot. The shoot escapes, and the oak explodes upwards. The "bush" at the base remains. Natural topiary! On the bird transect trail at Jasper Ridge, the Escobar Gate end.
