Carpenter Ant (Camponotus semitestaceous)

Carpenter Ant (Camponotus semitestaceous)

Here is how to tell Camponotus from Formica ants: if the ant freezes, holds still long enough to take off your pack and extra cameras, put away your glasses, focus, and take several photos -- it is a Camponotus. If it skitters away so fast you cannot even putter it, it is a Formica. This worker ant froze for at least a minute and a half, barely breathing. Then moved a bit and froze for another three minutes before ambling off, away from the nest. Here are four of my best images captured in that time.
