Female Syrphid Fly (Taxomerus marginatus) (Detail)

Female Syrphid Fly (Taxomerus marginatus) (Detail)

A good view of the antennae. There are tiny hair-like extensions coming out of the lumpy antennae. Most winged insects have two sets of wings. In flies, the back set has morphed into little counterweights: halteres. These give the fly maneuverability. This fly is certainly helping to pollinate the Tarweed.
