Variable Checkerspot Butterfly (Euphydryas chalcedona) on Flower

Variable Checkerspot Butterfly (Euphydryas chalcedona) on Flower

Is the flower of mule ears? Which one? Thanks to Vivian Neou for the butterfly ID. She says, "Northerns have more orange." And Jeffrey Glassberg, in "Butterflies through Binoculars in the West", points out that "Euphydryas eyes are brown while other checkerspots have blue-gray eyes." In that case, this is a Euphydryas, variable checkerspot. Trail 3 near Road F, 4/30/2017, 9:48:52 am.
