Sun Cup (Camissonia ovata) Blossoms

Sun Cup (Camissonia ovata) Blossoms

The flower proper extends below ground where the ovaries are. The pollen must traverse the long floral tube to get there. Seed dispersal may be from ants, or from cracking of the clay-like soil (Toni Corelli, Flowering Plants of Edgewood Natural Preserve). Sun Cups seem to favor growing in or near the dirt road.
