The Jasper Ridge expedition visited Storm King at the end of October 2014. A beautiful country estate on the Hudson, extensive grounds -- 200 acres -- in full fall color. And the sculptures! Placed in the fields, amongst the trees, taking their place in the natural world. The grounds have also been sculpted: grass mown in sweeping patterns, fields and woods interlaced. Even though the day was mostly overcast, the visit was magical. Anne Tully was our gracious and knowledgeable guide.

The wall by Andy Goldsworthy! Striding across a hilltop, snaking down through the trees, diving into the pond -- and emerging on the other side, marching straight up the hill to the copse of trees!! It is called "Five Men, Seventeen Days, Fifteen Boulders, One Wall". But I did not see the boulders that it used to snake around. Maybe I missed them, or maybe something has changed since 2010. The wall has aged wonderfully, and the tree trunks show off the sinuous curves in any case.

Maya Lin's "Storm King Wavefield" is also wonderful. I would like to visit this throughout the day, throughout the seasons. Wander into it. It also has settled in, it belongs. (Installed in 2007-09.)

Henry Moore's reclining piece is explored by a spider, dancing over the rough marks on the metal. It looks smooth on a human scale, but quite rough on a spider's.

There are many other pieces there. It was good to wander the grounds, approaching a grand sculpture and walking beneath, coming upon something new around the corner. The pillars are nice. The standing man near the house. Many more. A nice day.
