I was told that this monument was used by the Allied bombers to get a fix on Kiel, and was not itself bombed during the war. The submarine was recovered from the bottom and is a tourist attraction. Kiel still builds submarines, now for Gulf States, Israel, etc. The US only builds atomic subs.
