Stopping to observe some iconic Valley Oaks, we begin to notice the abundant birdlife therein. All of these perched birds were photographed in Valley Oaks -- the majority in one of my favorites, the "Phainopepla Tree" at the top of a rise along Road F. Despite its falling health -- actually, I see no signs of life either in the tree itself or even in the abundant mistletoe that decorated it -- it is still a haven for birdlife. I watched a woodpecker (Hairy?) as it posed for me on a branch; a pair of Western Bluebirds also appeared. Swallows swooped around, resting occasionally in the tree. Another Valley Oaks gave a high perch to a Red-tailed Hawk, scanning the grassland; a feather had fallen beneath the lone Valley Oak near Trail 15. Overhead, Red-tailed Hawks searched for prey, and Swallows dove here and there, harvesting insects from the warming air.
