These photos were taken during the spring Jasper Ridge Ant Survey, 5/16/2015. Macros include: two folders of ants (I separate the many nice Messors and others on lichen-covered serpentine rock) and flowers and other non-ant insects. A final folder shows the ant surveyors themselves, with landscapes to give context.
The Jasper Ridge Ant Survey has been carried out twice a year since Spring 1993. We look for five person-minutes at points spaced on a 100-meter grid, spanning Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. We list the genus (or genera) of the ant(s) seen.
The survey shows the interaction of invasive ants (especially the aggressive Argentine ant) and native species. (There are over two dozen native species in at least a dozen genera.) As climate change progresses, this long-term data set will become even more valuable.
