Helen and I drove to Mt. Vernon, OR in eastern Oregon to experience the eclipse. On the way we passed through Nevada (and stayed at the "Winners' Casino" in Winnemucca). In Oregon, near Hines, we visited the Malheur National Monument (scene of the takeover by the Bundy crew); the Diamond Craters (volcanic, no diamonds); and High Lake in the Strawberry Wilderness Area (mountain sheep! butterflies!). We came back down Hwy 395 into northern California, then Hwy 299 through Burney, to Redding.

Lots of smoke along the way, in northern Nevada, eastern Oregon, and northern California. We met some firemen in Winnemucca who had come from Arizona to back up the local fire crews.

Highway 395 would make a nice road trip some day, along the three western states, bordering the Great Basin. Rogelia?
