A tiny droplet of dew on a grass stem holds mystery and magic. The magic is the inverted image of the scene beyond -- in this case, a lonely valley oak. The mystery: What is that creature?? There seems to be a black, two-headed creature swimming about inside the drop of dew. Or perhaps it is on the surface? Or perhaps it is not alive at all, but just a piece of flotsam, moving with the currents in or on the droplet? I tend to doubt the latter, since its movements were erratic.

If it was a living creature, where was it before the fog formed? After the droplets disappeared? Why?

Here are several images of the mystery creature. Please help. Leave a comment if you have a guess, what this could be. I know it was really there, not an artifact of my camera or lens.

This collection also explores different choices of focus for the same scene. Macro photography can be interesting -- especially photography of other lenses, such as drops of dew.

Check out the companion collection first. It is a general survey of my day at Jasper Ridge. This collection focuses on the creature -- and plays with focus.
