Phainopepla (Phainopepla nitens)

Phainopepla (Phainopepla nitens)

Rare in Jasper Ridge, indeed in all of San Mateo County. Seen at Jasper Ridge by Bill Clark in 1981 and by Leonie Batkin, Phil Leighton and many others in 2009-10. There were two birds at JR in 2010. Seen in a Mistletoe-laden isolated Valley Oak in the grasslands [the "Phainopepla Tree"], Road F near Escobar Gate, December 18, 2009 at 9:22 am -- during the Christmas Bird Count.
