The celebration begins with reports from the graduate students who set up and carried out the original ant surveys. (I enjoy their talks so much I don’t think to take photos.) Volunteer coordinators and leaders receive thanks, and of course Deborah Gordon speaks as well. Then we gather for the largest group photo of Ant Survey volunteers yet. Over lunch, in between conversations, an open mic gives participants a chance to reminisce.

After lunch, walking around Searsville Lake, we visit some well-known ant hot spots and even find a rare ant colony, tracked since at least 2016. (Note the historical photo in the “Ants” gallery.)

Before our celebration and during the walk, I look up and notice birds and more distant surroundings: see the neighboring gallery for some of these photos.
