The sun comes out, pale light the morning after rain. Big-leaf Maple is leafing out on Sweet Springs Trail. Poison Oak abounds, thrusting into the space of the trail, seeking light and space. Around the corner in the grasslands, a Blue Dicks flower droops, covered in fresh raindrops; some of them show the grassland behind in their perfect lenses. A tiny insect explores the flower. Heading back home on the Mader Valley Trail: Douglas’ Iris and Blue Witch Nightshade, dripping with fresh raindrops. Clouds part to reveal a green Windy Hill past the Frog Pond.

BONUS: a few days earlier, Sweet Springs Trial was dry. A fairy moth, long antennae extended, rests on the flowers of Fat Solomon. Around the corner: seeds and a remaining flower of Hound’s Tongue, inspected by a tiny moth.

Enjoy the trail, wherever you tread.
