Young California Buckeye (Aesculus californica), Leafing Out

Young California Buckeye (Aesculus californica), Leafing Out

We saw many stages of Buckeye development: a seed putting forth a root; young yearlings like this, leafing out; more mature trees, leafing out or just in bud. Buckeyes are a remnant species. They evolved with macrofauna such as the local camels, which spread their seeds. For over 10,000 years Buckeyes have persisted, despite the local extinction of their original primary seed dispersers.
