What you see depends not only on where you look, and when; on your vantage point, how closely you look, where you focus, how much you include, and where you put the frame; but also on how long you hold your gaze. Exposure time is important for all moving subjects, especially moving water, splashes, rapids, waterfalls. I played with different exposure times on the waterfall on Gray Eagle Creek, just upstream from Gray Eagle Lodge where we stayed. Before and after sunset. Here are different exposure times under some different light conditions.

My conclusion: very fast and very slow exposures each have their charms; dancing droplets, silklike drapery. Exposures in the middle range, faster than about 1/15 or 1/30 sec and slower than about 1/250 sec, I find less pleasant. Blurry water but not yet silky smoothness. What do you think?
