Garth Harwood is an accomplished birder, tracker, outdoorsman, and educator. He has led Hidden Villa's Environmental Education Program (HVEEP) for years. He led residents of Portola Valley Ranch on this wonderful birding outing, up Old Spanish Trail to the Grandmother Tree at Ridge Rest, then back down Coalmine Ridge Trail and Toyon Trail. We saw -- and heard! -- many many birds. I captured a few in photos. After a wihile, I fell back, focusing more on spring flowers and -- look at that! -- insects on the flowers. This was a rare visit to Coal Mine Ridge for me; I usually walk hereabouts with my dog. A wonderful spring morning.

BTW, we saw several people with dogs up there. It *is* very tempting to take one's dog. We all love our dogs, and *our* dog will be good on the trail. We don't realize the impact dog scent and dog activity has on the native wildlife, bobcats and other predators, prey. There are many places hereabouts to walk with dogs, including Windy Hill Open Space Preserve just across Alpine Road. Please keep your dogs off of Coal Mine Ridge!
