Harvester Ant (Messor andrei) on Lichen-covered Serpentine Rock

Harvester Ant (Messor andrei) on Lichen-covered Serpentine Rock

Struggling to transport a grass seed. I watched this ant for nine minutes, as she wrestled this long seed back and forth across the serpentine rock. She finally went off into the weeds and I moved on. Watching this effort, it did not seem especially goal-driven. More like evolution: random in detail, sometimes leading to an interesting result after a long time. I suppose there are many worker ants and many difficult seeds. If some of them make it back to the nest, fine. There is probably a size limit: above this level of difficulty, very few seeds make it back. This one seemed right on the bubble.
