We piloted the dinghy (before its outboard motor gave trouble) through a narrow channel, lined with mangroves, into a wide shallow enclosed bay: Bahia Amortajada on Isla San José. Mangroves on the island side, an narrow spit of land separating us from the Gulf of California. Many birds called this peaceful spot, home.

Please help with IDs -- leave a comment! I do not have all my birding resources handy; in any case, I do hope some reader knows more than I do re bird identification. Even though it is notoriously harder to ID a bird from a single photo than from observing it and hearing it in the field.
