Ceanothus Silkmoth (Hyalophora euryalus) in Madrone (Arbutus mensiesii)
Large numbers emerge from their silk cocoons at the same time, maximizing mating opportunities. The adults do not eat. Females live 2 or 3 days, staying hidden from predators. They release powerful pheromones to draw the males, who fly up to 20 miles searching for a score. The large feathery antennae of the male can detect a single molecule of the female's pheromone. This looks like a male to me. It waits, drying out, and will fly at night. (Source: LA Times 5/17/2005)
