Blue Oak Forest

Blue Oak Forest

A single-aged stand of Blue Oaks (Quercus douglasii), framed by a Mistletoe-draped Valley Oak (Quercus lobata). Coast Live Oaks (Quercus agrifolia) extend to the hilltop on the right. Blue Oaks are drought deciduous. They are among the most drought tolerant of California's Oaks. At Jasper Ridge, they tend to grow in groves, many trees together. Valley Oaks are winter deciduous. They tend to grow as isolated, craggy trees. Coast Live Oaks stay green all year.
