Carpenter Ant (Camponotus sp) with Yellowjacket Wasp Abdomen

Carpenter Ant (Camponotus sp) with Yellowjacket Wasp Abdomen

Two Camponotus (Carpenter Ants) were busily carrying pieces of the Yellowjacket back to the nest, scurrying here and there. When I got down low with my camera, this one froze. For a long time. I took many photos. I guess it hoped I could not see a stationary ant. Only the antennae waved around a bit. There are two intact antennae; the one toward us is way out of focus and hard to see. (Depth of field is very shallow at these short distances. This image was captured in very low light: 1/13 sec at f/25, ISO 3200.) IDs confirmed by Noa Pinter-Wollman.

Note the smooth thorax. Camponotus, not Formica moki. But large eyes.
