Hair

The Tarantula's abdomen, covered with red hairs, and a hind leg, also hairy. Boyce Burge: "Thanks for the great close ups of Aphonopelma.... (Tarantula). Those red hairs are highly irritating and can be thrust at enemies. What a creature!" These are called "urticating hairs". Stinging Nettles and some caterpillars also have urticating hairs; they can irritate the skin or eyes of a possible enemy.
